Poland’s population was estimated at 38.6 million in January 2020 - most aged between 15 years and 64 years. The increase of electronic payments has been driven by the overall demographic willingness to adopt new payment technologies allowing online shopping. The average annual online spend per capita is 581 euros - below Europe's average of 2,186 euros per capita.
Poland’s internet penetration is at 78 percent. Ten percent of Polish cross-border ecommerce purchases are from China, the UK and Germany. At 6 percent of total ecommerce spending, cross-border spending is 0.6 billion euros. Poland’s mobile penetration is 66.5 percent. The share of transactions made by mobile is 11 percent - or about 1.1 billion euros.
Online banking has been enthusiastically adopted. More than 40 million transactions are completed via smartphone alone. Bank transfers are still the most-used payment method - representing up to 75 percent of all epayments. But cards as a payment option are expanding. Cards are forecast to take almost 30 percent of all payments until 2021.
