Intelligent
Routing
Engine (IRE)

Enterprise businesses need a complete understanding of how their customers want to pay in their major markets in order to optimise their payments setup.

Intelligent Routing Engine

What are the challenges ?

Merchants in digital (eCommerce) world are often faced with below issues:
  • How can they reduce costs on cross border transactions ?
  • How can they maintain high transaction success rate ?
  • How can they provide seamless customer experience ?

How APEXX IRE can help merchants?

APEXX Intelligent Routing is a powerful engine that allows flexibility to distribute transaction requests to different payment gateways based on defined criteria using data in customer’s transaction request. Transactions can be routed to right payment solution provider to optimise success rates and reduce transaction fee. Using real time analysis across multiple variables such as card type, bin data, geo location etc., IRE determines the gateway provider to direct these transactions to. Example: Transactions from a specific region can be directed to specific provider to reduce cross border processing fees and provide better approval ratio.

Three routing types: Static, Rule Based and Round Robin are available to merchants to define routing criteria.

Static Routing

Static routing is a solution that works for small businesses. This is a simple routing technique where transactions can be routed to different providers using following parameters:

  • •  Organisation
  • •  Currency
  • •  Country
  • •  Priority

Rule-based Routing

With rule-based routing, merchants will be able to setup routing rules based on several transaction parameters to select best provider/ gateway. Following parameters can be used to define one or more rules:

Merchant Data:
  • Merchant Country
  • Merchant Website
Transaction Data:
  • Currency
  • Transaction Amount
  • Consumer Country
  • Channel
  • 3DS version
BIN Data:
  • Issuer Country
  • Issuer Name
  • Schema Name
  • Card Type

In addition to above rules can also be defined using custom data fields Default rule must be defined to ensure that transactions which do not match all other rules are still processed.

Smart Split Routing

With smart split, merchants will be able to send transactions to more than one acquirer. Four types of smart split rules can be configured:

Volume Based (Percentage)

With volume-based approach, merchants will be able to split and route transaction volume to more than one gateway/ acquirer. Rule can be defined as x percentage in x volume of transactions format.

Example: If every 5000 transactions need to be routed to three PSPs (25% to PSP1, 50% to PSP2 and 25% to PSP3), define rule as shown below:

Volume Split (%)Route ToCascade to PSP
25%PSP1PSP2, PSP3, PSP4
50%PSP2PSP3
25%PSP3PSP2, PSP1

Volume Based (Absolute)

Volume SplitRoute ToCascade to PSP
1000PSP1PSP2, PSP3, PSP4
2500PSP1PSP3
1500PSP1PSP2, PSP1

Day Based

Define smart split rules based on days of the week.

Day Based RoutingRoute ToCascade to PSP
Monday, WednesdayPSP1PSP2, PSP3, PSP5
Tuesday, ThursdayPSP1PSP3
Friday, Saturday & SundayPSP1PSP2, PSP1

Time Based

Define smart split rules based on time.

Time Based RoutingRoute ToCascade to PSP
00:00:00 - 12:00:00PSP1PSP2, PSP3, PSP5
12:00:00 - 18:00:00PSP1PSP3
18:00:00 - 00:00:00PSP1PSP2, PSP1

Merchant can opt for Rule based routing, Smart Split or both. If merchant is subscribed to both routing methods (Rule based and Smart Split), then one or more routing rules can be configured in such a way that once routing rule is determined details are passed to smart split method. Transaction will be routed to a gateway based on smart split rules. This feature gives much more flexibility to not only routing transactions based on routing parameters but further route them based on time or weekdays.

* Cascading mechanism is applied for all transactions irrespective of routing type configured.

Cascading

Cascading mechanism supports a seamless customer experience. With this declined transaction can be automatically routed to secondary provider. As this process happens behind the scenes, it results in customers completing the sale successfully thus higher approval ratio and more volumes can be processed.

Cascading also ensures that any payment processing issues occurred due to disruption to one of the providers (PSP/ acquirer etc) services are properly handled. When such event occurs, routing engine immediately routes transaction to other available providers.

Highly available systems with backup servers ensures transactions are still processed in the event of any physical failure.

Conclusion

APEXX Intelligent Routing Engine, helps merchants to:

  • Improve user experience
  • Reduce payment processing fee by identifying best PSP to process a specific transaction
  • Increase in global authorization rate
