14 Sep, 2020 . 4 minutes

Greece’s population was estimated at 10.4 million in 2020. The average highest online spending is by those aged between 25 years and 34 years with 27.9 percent last year. B2C e-commerce users are expected to increase 6.7 percent year on year and are expected to to amount to 5.2 million users in 2020.

Internet penetration rose to 79 percent in January - up 3.8 percent from 2019. B2C ecommerce users are expected to reach an average transaction value of US$825.3 per user and total transactions to rise to US$4,324 million by the end of 2020.

Even before Covid-19, cash lacked popularity. According to a survey by PayPal in June the pandemic had encouraged six of 10 Greeks to use new contactless payments. It also saw 43 percent of Greeks aged 65 and older avoiding cash. The virus saw more payments shift online. During Greece's quarantine most of those aged 20 and younger preferred contactless payments. This new behaviour has seen 51 percent of citizens now paying bills online or via mobile app.
